success stories

ponchita

Ponchita, formerly La Guera, was found in 2022 abandoned outside an apartment complex in Tulum, sleeping in the street beside a puddle and scavenging for food in trash piles.

With the help of Tulum Animal Rescue—a local platform run by a dedicated individual who works tirelessly to connect animals in need with people who can help—Ponchita was treated for parasites and minor skin issues. Through a patchwork of support from local vets, fosters, and everyday people willing to step in, she was vetted and cleared for travel. Dr. Juan’s clinic was instrumental in making sure she received care in time to make the journey to California where she now lives in a loving home on secured acreage alongside Peggy, where both dogs enjoy safety, sunshine, and the freedom to roam.

peggy

Peggy, formerly Haku, was just a puppy—no more than five months old—when she was found in 2023 in Tulum after being hit by a vehicle and left without care for some time. When Alma Animal Tulum was informed, they stepped in to help. Her injuries were severe, and her back leg had to be amputated. Alma Animal’s founder personally fostered Peggy during her recovery, making sure she had a safe and calm environment to heal.

Now living in California, Peggy has adapted extremely well to life on three legs. She spends her days enjoying sunshine, hikes, and plenty of open space—alongside Ponchita, another former street dog from Tulum.

ariel

This female dog was found in heat in April 2025, being pursued by a group of male dogs. A local woman who frequently helps animals stepped in and got her off the street before she could be injured or become pregnant. She was taken immediately to the vet, where she received excellent care, testing, surgery, and medications to ensure her safety and prevent future litters. This girl received tremendous support from local people who helped her with vetting, safe haven and travel throughout her journey. We were able to help cover the some of the cost of her initial medical care and safe boarding while she recovered until her rescuer was able to find her adopter so she never has to live on the streets again.

Ariel now lives in Alaska with a loving family in her new forever home.
